Nitrous Oxide (N2O) catering regulations

It is important to follow all relevant regulations when using N2O in catering in the UK.

In the United Kingdom, nitrous oxide (N2O) is regulated as a psychoactive substance under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. This means that it is illegal to produce, supply, or import N2O for human consumption.

However, N2O is exempt from these regulations when it is used for a specific, non-psychoactive purpose, such as whipping cream. In these cases, N2O is regulated as a food additive and is subject to the same safety and labelling requirements as other food additives.

It is important to follow all relevant regulations when using N2O in catering in the UK. These include:

Proper labeling and storage: Nitrous oxide should be properly labeled and stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

Safety guidelines: When using nitrous oxide, it's important to follow all safety guidelines. This includes using the correct equipment and only purchasing nitrous oxide from reputable suppliers. Also, make sure you have proper ventilation and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Compliance with food regulations: Nitrous oxide should be used only in food preparation and it should not come in contact with food directly.
